According to Schallenberg, the isolation will begin on Monday and will last 10 days. Most shops will be closed, cultural events will be canceled. Also, according to the Chancellor, the children will have to return to home schooling.
The country’s health minister, Wolfgang Mukstein, later said that schools would remain open to those who had to go, but all parents were asked to leave their children at home if possible.
According to local television ORF, vaccination will also be mandatory in the country from February 1.
“We don’t want a fifth wave. We don’t need a sixth or seventh wave,” Schallenberg was quoted as saying by ORF.
Austria initially introduced a national lockdown only for the unvaccinated, which began on Monday. But as the number of cases of the virus continued to rise sharply, the government said it had no choice but to spread the lockdown to everyone.
Total isolation will last 10 days, then the government will assess the consequences, and if the number of cases is not reduced enough, it can be extended to a maximum of 20 days.
It is noted that Austria, a country with a population of 8.9 million people, has one of the lowest vaccination rates in Western Europe. Over the last seven days, more than 10,000 new cases of coronavirus have been reported in the country every day.
