“Although we have warned that Mr Saakashvili’s return (to his country – ed.) Will worsen the polarized political situation in Georgia, Mr Saakashvili, like all prisoners awaiting trial, deserves fair and dignified treatment in accordance with international standards. and Georgian law, ”the senators stressed.
They called on the Georgian government to immediately implement the recommendations of an independent medical team and ensure that Saakashvili is provided with the necessary medical care.
“We are closely monitoring the trial and stress the importance of ensuring fairness, transparency and personal presence. The right to a fair and speedy trial is a hallmark of any democracy, and this case is no exception, ”the senators said.
In addition, US lawmakers called on official Tbilisi to take into account the seriousness of Saakashvili’s case and to draw attention to its potential consequences for Georgia’s political stability.
“As the situation worsens, the risk of miscalculation increases, which could lead to a serious deterioration in Mr Saakashvili’s health or worse. Such a tragedy will have a lasting negative impact on Georgia’s democratic aspirations. We call on all parties to act in the interests of the Georgian people, “the statement said.
