The extension of the age restrictions is due to the fact that the vaccination campaign in Hong Kong, which began in February, lagged behind many other developed countries: about 67% of the population were vaccinated with two vaccinations from Sinovac or the German company BioNTech.
In a statement issued Friday, the city government said it had purchased 1 million additional doses of BioNTech to introduce a third dose of COVID-19 vaccine.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health of Canada has officially approved the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for children aged 5 to 11 years.
It is noted that the dose (10 mcg) for children 5-11 years is one third of the dose for children over 12 years. This is because healthy children have a stronger immune system than young people and adults, the agency said.
