The ombudsman called on the defense minister to take action

A soldier of the contract service of the Armed Forces of Ukraine became a victim of blackmail and threats from employees due to his sexual orientation. This was announced by the Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights Lyudmila Denisova in her Telegram channel .

Denisova said that despite the fact that the soldier wrote a report in which he reported threats and harassment, indicating the names of those involved, there was no response from the leadership. In addition, according to media reports, the battalion commander said that the presence of LGBT people in the army was unacceptable and that the perpetrators would not be punished at all.
The Ombudsman added that the prohibition of all forms of discrimination is established by Articles 24 of the Basic Law of Ukraine, 7 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, 14 of the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms and Protocol № 12 thereto, and Article 6 of the Law of Ukraine “On Principles of Prevention and anti-discrimination in Ukraine ”.
“I appeal to the Minister of Defense of Ukraine to take under personal control the issue of conducting an official investigation into this incident, including the actions of the battalion commander, and taking measures to prevent discrimination, including on the grounds of sexual orientation, in the Armed Forces of Ukraine.” Denisova added.
Many Ukrainians have a negative attitude towards the LGBT community. In particular, 47% of Ukrainians have a negative attitude towards the LGBT community.
