kyiv.Ukraine.Ukraine Gate – November 21,2021- The first of DTEK’s seven coal ships contracted from the United States and Colombia arrived in Ukraine on November 20.
The Panamax-class vessel is moored at Pivdenny Port and is intended to serve the needs of the PJSC Centerenergo. The volume of the first shipment amounted to 60.5 thousand tons.
It should be noted that DTEK has agreed with international suppliers to import 7 shipments of coal to Ukraine. Of these, 5 shipments of coal are from the United States and 2 from Colombia. The shipment volume of each ship ranges from 40 to 75 thousand tons. The total volume of contract deliveries made to cover the needs of the Ukrainian TPP is approximately 470 thousand tons.
“All ship consignments will arrive in Ukraine during November 2021 – January 2022. The next batch is expected in late November, 4 – in December and 1 – in January. All of them are intended for the needs of DTEK Energo TPP,” the statement said.
In addition to ship deliveries, the company imports coal from Poland and Kazakhstan. Thus, today the total amount of already contracted gas coal from Poland, the USA and Kazakhstan is about 0.9 million tons.
Coal imports are a temporary measure to cover fuel shortages, while the use of Ukrainian coal remains a priority, DTEK’s press service said.
The head of the Independent Trade Union of Miners of Ukraine Mykhailo Volynets stated that coal reserves at the country’s thermal power plants currently amount to 49.84%, or 378 thousand tons of the planned guaranteed volume.
For the stable passage of the heating season of 2021-2022, the power units of thermal power plants and gas-fired thermal power plants will be involved in balancing the power system.
In November, the thermal power plant is expected to supply about 1.9 million tons of coal: 1.4 million tons of Ukrainian production and 500 thousand tons imported from Poland, the United States and Kazakhstan.
