kyiv.Ukraine.Ukraine Gate – November 27,2021- Afghan refugee Sharbat Gula, who has been popularized by a photo on the cover of National Geographic, has been granted political asylum in Italy amid the Taliban’s seizure of power in Afghanistan.
According to Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, the 49-year-old woman was taken to Italy in the context of evacuation from Afghanistan and received under the refugee integration programme.
It is noted that Sharbat Gula is in Rome, and there is no information about whether or not members of her family were granted asylum.
As you know, the face of the girl Sharbat Gula became known all over the world after the publication of her photo on the cover of National Geographic in June 1985. A year earlier, it was captured by magazine photographer Steve McCurry in Pakistan’s Nasyr Bagh refugee camp.
