Archaeologist and co-founder of the park Ernie Walker, along with buffalo keeper Craig Toms, saw stones with strange stripes near the place where animals take so-called dust baths. To do this, bison dig the ground with their hooves to form holes. That’s how they found petroglyphs.
When the animals exposed part of the first stone, a 250-kilogram boulder with a carved image of bison ribs, excavations began in the park. It turned out that he was not alone there. In addition, archaeologists have found a large stone with a pattern in the form of a grid, a slightly smaller specimen with carved holes and a 545-kilogram boulder with carved stripes. Experts have determined that these drawings were made about 1,000 years ago – in the 11th century.
The excavations also revealed many traces of everyday life of the inhabitants of that time. These include tools, charcoal, bones, skulls, and more. A special discovery was the stone knife with which the petroglyphs were created.
Archaeological finds will be moved to the museum so that everyone can see the exhibits and learn more about the history of the region.
