Only those vaccinated against coronavirus and those who have recovered from the disease are allowed to enter events and public places.
The government also encouraged people to work from home.
The new rules will take effect on December 6 and will run until January 24.
“The Federal Council is now assessing the situation as very critical. The emergence of the Omicron strain poses new challenges,” the statement said.
According to the Federal Office of Health, three Omicron cases have already been confirmed in Switzerland.
On November 26, the World Health Organization named the strain the Greek letter Omicron.
Omicron has already been recorded in 38 countries: some European, Australia, Israel, Hong Kong, Japan, North and Latin America.
