Scientists from the Institute of Aerospace Technology worked on the project with the support of the British government.
The aircraft was developed as part of the FlyZero concept, which provides for the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions from commercial flights. The British government has allocated 15 million pounds for the implementation of the program.
The medium-sized airliner is presented, the wingspan reaches 54 meters. The model is equipped with two turbofan engines and cryogenic tanks for hydrogen storage – in the tail and front of the fuselage. Fuel in them will be stored at a temperature of minus 250 degrees Celsius.
Researchers claim that the liner will be able to transport 279 passengers. However, hydrogen is more difficult and expensive to store on board, and it will take years to build the necessary infrastructure and equip airports with new gas stations.
Aircraft on hydrogen:
In January 2017, the first hydrogen-fueled aircraft was tested in China. The aircraft was created by experts from the Dalian Bureau of Chemical Research of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Liaoning Aviation Research Institute on the basis of a two-seater electric aircraft RX1E.
