The suspension bridge broke in the area of Cañada de Guadalupe in the state of Oaxaca in southern Mexico. More than 20 people who crossed the river were injured, the regional rescue department said on Twitter on Sunday .

“The number of victims of the collapse of the bridge has reached 23 people,” – said in a statement. Among those injured were 11 children. The condition of several people is assessed as serious. The victims are currently receiving treatment in hospitals in the region.
According to preliminary data, the structure could not withstand the weight of a large group of people. The regional prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation into the circumstances of the incident.
