People have always looked for a way to build shelter from the weather and predators from improvised materials. So the Eskimos had to learn to use what is in abundance on their original lands – snow. And most incredible, inside the snow-ice hemisphere is surprisingly cozy and even warm. It’s hard to believe, but the air temperature here fluctuates around +20 degrees Celsius, while on the street it may well be up to – 40.
There are several secrets here, many generations have improved the way the needle is built, this is the name of the traditional Eskimo housing. The easiest way to adapt to the “construction” of snowdrifts. Especially if one person needs shelter, the walls are thoroughly compacted, and then the “room” itself is dug up.
The comfortable size of such apartments is about two meters in height and a little more in width. There is no door to the needle. But the way out is arranged in such a way that the cold does not penetrate into the house. On the contrary, through the hole and the tunnel, laid below floor level, there is always an influx of fresh air, which is especially important when using the hearth inside. However, the manhole needs special strengthening in case of heavy snowfall.
If the building for wintering or drifts around is not observed around, ice blocks are used as building materials. Cubes or bricks are cut from them, it is interesting that rectangles are used only to build the base of the needle. As the walls are laid in a spiral, gradually narrowing upwards, in the following rows of bricks will change their shape into a trapezoid, and then completely into triangles.

Eskimos use a mixture of water and snow as construction cement. The process may include “windows” of clear ice or seal stomachs, but in general, the walls of snow themselves conduct light well, and in addition, locals use for additional lighting special lamps filled with fat.
Under the influence of heat and fire, the walls of the needle melt slightly from the inside and become even stronger, in addition, the snow house is always dry. Housewives for convenience and comfort are placed inside and hung on the walls of the skin, but even without heating the hearth, inside such housing, the temperature does not fall below +15 degrees.
