The Indian capital, New Delhi, has banned New Year’s Eve and other New Year’s celebrations to contain a possible outbreak of Omicron coronavirus, as the city has reported the highest number of cases in the country along with the state of Maharashtra.

In the last 24 hours, the number of Omicron cases in India has risen to 213. Maharashtra, the western state of Omicron cases, has also advised people to avoid meetings.
India has not yet reported any deaths from this variant of the coronavirus.
“No cultural events / gatherings / congregations may be held to celebrate Christmas or New Year in the national capital of Delhi,” a Delhi administration circular said on Wednesday.
Authorities, whose precept applies to a large city of 20 million people, added that the last few days have seen a steady increase in COVID-19 cases.
On Tuesday, the health ministry called on states to prepare for potential surges in the number of infections and gave them the “green light” to impose restrictions.
The Delhi government has also imposed a 50% limit on restaurant capacity and limited the number of people allowed to weddings to 200, according to a circular.
The Indian government has not yet decided whether to offer revaccination to citizens, despite calls from some states and medical experts to do so.
