Reindeer animals do not tolerate heat, so global warming threatens them with negative consequences.
Finnish experts believe that Lapland deer are comfortable living at -50 degrees Celsius. They build up a dense protective layer that lasts all year round. Due to this, it is not easy for them to adapt if the temperature rises sharply.
Researchers say the Arctic is warming at twice the rate of the rest of the world. According to Youko Kumpula, a senior researcher at the Finnish Institute of Natural Resources, warming causes early snowfall and rain to form a thick layer of ice when the frost hits. Deer can’t break through this ice and find food. They have to leave their habitats to find non-freezing lichens.
