The findings of scientists on the benefits of pistachios as a natural antihypertensive agent were published in the Journal of the American Heart Association. Experts conducted an experiment in which participants (people with high blood pressure) were divided into two separate groups: the first followed a diet containing low-fat snacks, and the second – a diet of moderate fat with the inclusion of pistachios. Both groups adhered to their food systems for four weeks. The volunteers then underwent a series of tests.
The researchers concluded that a diet containing pistachios helps reduce some risk factors for cardiovascular disease.
“The lowering effect on blood pressure in pistachios is greater than in other types of nuts,” – said the authors of the project.
According to experts, the use of pistachios significantly reduced the total peripheral resistance of volunteers, increased cardiac output and improved some heart rate. They also noticed the ability of this type of nut to “significantly reduce” high blood pressure during sleep.
“Systolic blood pressure dropped significantly after following a” pistachio diet “, with the greatest reduction observed during sleep,” experts said.
Pistachios contain monounsaturated fatty acids and a large number of substances – polyesterins, which have known benefits in the presence of hypertension. They also contain the amino acid L-arginine, which is converted into nitric oxide in the body, which helps to relax and dilate blood vessels. The result is a decrease in blood pressure.
Researchers say that the hypotensive effect of pistachios is best seen when nuts account for 20 percent of calories consumed during the day.
