Details
Earlier, information was received about 15 victims.
County officials say no casualties or destroyed buildings have been reported. Electricity, communications, road infrastructure and water facilities in the quake-hit areas were not affected at all. Tiles fell from the roofs of several houses in the disaster area.
Rescuers continue to search for victims or other destruction.
It is noted that the seismological department of Yunnan Province sent a working group of 23 people to the affected area.
The quake was located about 60 km from the administrative center of Ninglan Yi Autonomous County and 110 km from the ancient city of Lijiang, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. According to the China Center for Seismological Networks, the epicenter was at a depth of 10 km.
The area of seismic impact with an intensity of 6 points and more was 1389 square kilometers – this area is home to 24 thousand people.
The fire department sent 4 vehicles and 15 people to the area where the epicenter of the earthquake was recorded to assess the scale of the disaster. A search and rescue team of 60 people was also formed and sent.
Let’s add
Yunnan, the region is very vulnerable to earthquakes. There is frequent seismic activity due to the collision of Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, which form a huge Himalayan mountain range.
Hundreds were injured and more than 100,000 were displaced in October 2014 after a magnitude 6 earthquake struck Yunnan, near China’s border with Myanmar and Laos.
China is regularly affected by earthquakes, especially in its mountainous western and southwestern regions, where Yunnan lies.
In 2008, a magnitude 7.9 earthquake shook or killed 87,000 people in southwestern Sichuan Province.
