Aging is not limited to healthy skin and hair – it also affects the muscles, bones and brain. According to a new study (published in the journal Molecular Nutrition & Food Research), the consumption of certain foods and beverages can slow the aging of the human brain. Scientists have found that their presence in the diet correlates with a low rate of deterioration of cognitive functions, as well as more efficient and productive work of the mind.
The study involved 842 people who did not suffer from dementia. They were monitored for 12 years. Subjects also underwent neuropsychological tests that allowed scientists to assess changes in cognitive qualities that occur in people over time. Brain function was correlated with the state of the intestine and the metabolism of the participants.
Researchers have concluded that the consumption of foods and beverages that are rich in polyphenols is associated with better protection of the brain from aging processes that contribute to its cognitive degradation.
In particular, scientists have named the following foods and beverages:
mushrooms;
red wine (in very moderate quantities);
coffee;
cocoa;
dark chocolate.
According to researchers, the polyphenolic substances contained in them protect neuronal cells from the destructive effects of oxidative stress. In addition, polyphenols have a beneficial effect on the intestinal microflora, which is also an important factor in ensuring good brain health.
