The study involved more than 100 men and women with an average age of 40 years. They all took part in a retreat (spiritual practice) of meditation. At the same time, they donated blood 5-8 weeks before the start of the retreat, just before it started and 3 months after the end. The retreat lasted 8 days with normal sleep and a vegan diet. The duration of the meditation sessions, which were held in complete silence, was 10 hours a day.
Blood tests performed 3 months after the end of the retreat showed that the participants had increased activity of 220 genes involved in the immune system, including 68 genes required for the transmission of interferon signals.
Researchers believe that in this condition a person is better protected not only from infections but also from autoimmune pathologies such as multiple sclerosis or some diseases such as cancer.
Researchers say that 10-hour meditation sessions are, of course, not available to most people. But even 20 minutes of meditation a day for a long time will improve the health of the body.
