Some extend the shelf life of food, others – improve the taste, color or reduce the energy value of food. But are they all safe and will they not cause health problems? Let’s understand.
Preservatives
Preservatives are one of the most commonly used additives. Most of them are contained in ready meals or semi-finished products. Preservatives prolong the shelf life of food, but at the same time do not bring any benefit to the human body. For this reason, it is best to eat fresh foods that contain most of the vitamins and minerals.
Preservatives are allowed
Of the added substances that do not cause health problems, it is worth mentioning mostly natural, such as sugar, salt or vinegar. Of course, their use should be in reasonable quantities. They must be indicated on the packaging unchanged and used in all types of cooking (drying, freezing, heat treatment, etc.).
Controversial substances
These substances are not very useful and there is still controversy about how they affect the proper functioning of the body in the long run. This group of substances, starting with the E200 series, should never be used frequently and in excessive quantities. These are mainly sorbic acid, potassium and calcium sorbate, borax, and muramidase.
Inappropriate substances
As for unsuitable substances, most of them are artificially created synthetic substances. They can cause health problems, some can even be carcinogenic, and their use can cause hypersensitivity or intolerance to certain foods. These include, for example, sulfur dioxide, benzoic acid, biphenyl, sodium and calcium sulfite, nisin or nitrite group.
To make things easier for you, here is a list of the substances that cause the biggest health problems:
Dyes: E104, E110, E122, E129, E124, E132, E133.
Benzoic acid: E210.
Sodium nitrite: E250.
Sodium glutamate: E621.
Aspartame: E951.
Sodium cyclamate: E952.
Which industrial products are best excluded from the diet
Most of these substances are products with a long shelf life. These include canned food, package soups, instant dishes, pate and more. Always read the composition when buying and if you see on the package a large number of letters E with numbers, it is better to return this product to the shelf and try to find a less saturated with chemical additives option or cook this dish yourself.
