Scientists have proven that the life expectancy of cancer patients can be extended by eating more fiber. Cancer patients will live longer if they increase the amount of fiber in their diet.
One of the important factors in the treatment of cancer patients is their lifestyle and diet. Researchers at the Cancer Research Center of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) have shown that the presence of high-fiber foods in the diet can help increase the life expectancy of patients diagnosed with melanoma, according to the portal Science,

Volunteers with advanced skin cancer were invited to conduct the study. All of them underwent immunotherapy with blockers of immune checkpoints. One group of patients consumed 20 or more grams of high-fiber foods daily, and patients in the second group ate their usual food. It was among the participants from the first group that longer periods of remission of the disease were recorded, which affected the increase in their life expectancy. Previously, similar studies were performed on laboratory animals, and the prognosis for survival was also higher among rodents that consumed sufficient amounts of dietary fiber.
“Immunotherapy affects the ability of human immune cells to fight cancer cells. We believe that changes in the composition of the intestinal microbiome may affect the response of patients with melanoma in response to immunotherapy. Help in this case may be a simple change in eating habits products high in fiber – fruits, vegetables and legumes, “- said Giorgio Trinkieri, head of the Laboratory of Integrative Immunology of Cancer at the NCI Center for Cancer Research, MD.
