Kyiv.Ukraine.Ukraine Gate – January 9,2022- The Kazakh authorities said that the situation has stabilized in all regions of Kazakhstan, and the government has taken control of the operational situation, President Kassym-Zumart Tokayev told a meeting at the operational headquarters on Sunday, January 9.
It is noted that 125 criminal cases have already been initiated due to mass protests, 5.8 thousand people were taken to the police, many of them foreigners.
President Tokayev said that law enforcement agencies would take all necessary measures to fully restore public order and security in the country.
“It was noted that the situation in all regions of the country has stabilized, control over the operational situation has been established, law enforcement agencies have liberated all previously seized administrative buildings, and communal facilities and life support systems are being restored,” the statement said.
Rallies against the sharp rise in liquefied gas prices began in Kazakhstan on January 2 in Zhanaozen (a city in the Mangistau region in the west of the country). They escalated into mass protests despite the resignation of the government and the announcement of lower gas prices.
Authorities in Kazakhstan have called on the Collective Security Treaty Organization to help quell the protests. The CSTO has officially confirmed the arrival of a Russian military contingent and its allies in Kazakhstan.
