How can expired cosmetics affect the skin? Using old cosmetics will not benefit the skin.

Undoubtedly, if we look in your locker with face and body care products, we will find there a huge number of your favorite jars and tubes – just in case and the problems you face at least once a month or two. But very often many women forget that the products have an expiration date. And not only the main, which is often several years, but also the shelf life after opening, which is usually indicated on the back of the package, in an icon in the form of an open jar.
Usually no one neglects the general expiration date. A few years is quite a lot, and the tool has every chance to end by this time! But not everyone pays attention to the shelf life after opening. First, it’s just as difficult to remember when you started using one of the dozens of products in your arsenal. Secondly, is there anything criminal in using cosmetics that will “live” for months or even years in terms of general shelf life?
But in fact it is very dangerous for the skin. We learned from experts why this is so and why check your cosmetics for suitability.
It is unlikely that you will want to eat, for example, cheese, knowing that it has expired. Because after such a meal you can get a lot of trouble! The same goes for cosmetics, but we can’t see these troubles right away.
Many women suffer for years because of problem skin, go to beauticians, dermatologists, go on diets to improve skin quality. And do not even think that the cause of skin problems may be in expired cosmetics!
Why do cosmetics have an expiration date?
Any care cosmetics (cream, tonic or cleanser) has a complex chemical composition: extracts, oils, thickeners, stabilizers. And all cosmetics contain preservatives. Of course, natural cosmetics contain minimal or no preservatives. But the fewer chemical preservatives in the composition, the shorter the shelf life.
What happens when the shelf life expires?
First, cosmetics lose their properties and become ineffective. But it’s not so scary.
Secondly, the chemical composition of the tool changes. The active ingredients are destroyed and oxidized, the emulsion is separated into phases (for example, the oil is separated from water). And the main danger is that pathogenic microorganisms settle in cosmetics and begin to multiply.
In fact, the organic components of cosmetics are a very favorable environment for the reproduction of bacteria. In just a week, a jar of cream can become a real incubator for staphylococci, streptococci, Escherichia coli and other members of this group. Sounds scary, doesn’t it?
In addition to the upper layer – the epidermis – our skin has another protective bacterial layer – the skin microflora. It is the protection and immunity of the skin. Pathogenic microorganisms provoke an inflammatory process there. If you have a strong immune system, then at first the skin may not react to expired cosmetics. But with regular contact, the face will become more receptive and sensitive.
Particularly dangerous is the entry of pathogenic microorganisms together with cosmetics on the mucous membranes of the eyes and lips. It can provoke conjunctivitis, blepharitis, herpes.
And, of course, the destruction of the protective shell of the skin leads to its premature aging, wrinkles and pigment spots. Do you want to take such a risk so that one or another tool will be on the shelf longer than necessary?
What to do to protect your skin and health?
Go through the cosmetics and throw away what is overdue, no matter how much you want to leave this expensive and beautiful jar! Remember that by not meeting the deadlines, you will not only not get the promised “rejuvenating” effect, but you will also cause yourself irreparable damage. Even if the cosmetics do not show signs of expiration (changes in consistency, odor), you still need to say goodbye to it, because invisible to the eye the processes of destruction and reproduction of bacteria could have already begun.
It is also a mistake to think that storing cosmetics in the refrigerator will increase its shelf life. Please don’t do this!
