Part of the Great Wall of China, about two meters long, collapsed due to an earthquake in Qinghai province in northwestern China, the Global Times reports,

“Two meters of the Great Wall of China fell in Shandang County, northwestern Gansu Province, 114 kilometers from the epicenter,” the newspaper said.

A magnitude 6.9 earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 km. Authorities discovered the devastation while inspecting local cultural relics. Specialists have established primary protection and started restoration work.
The section of the wall was built during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). The building was intended to protect China from invaders. The wall divides China into northern and southern parts for nomads and farmers, stretching from Liaoning Bay of the Yellow Sea to the sands of the Gobi Desert.
