In Lviv, a nine-year-old girl had to have a brain operation due to a runny nose, and a skull bone had to be kept in her abdomen for some time.

It was reported that the girls started with a common cold. At first, her parents treated her at home, but the runny nose did not pass, later it turned into inflammation of the mucous membrane of the paranasal sinuses.
A month of outpatient treatment was in vain. The girl was admitted to the children’s hospital of the First Territorial Medical Association of Lviv in an extremely difficult condition: she constantly had a high temperature, a headache, stopped working her arm and partially her leg.

“MRI (shown – ed.): Pus has reached the brain. The diagnosis is subdural empyema of the left hemisphere of the brain. ENT specialists quickly remove purulent contents from the sinuses, but the positive effect does not last long,” – said in a statement.
Ana had seizures and was taken to the intensive care unit.
The hospital noted that a multidisciplinary team of specialists consisting of pediatricians, neurologists, resuscitators, otolaryngologists, surgeons and neurosurgeons unanimously decided that an extremely complex operation was needed immediately.
As Ani’s condition did not allow her to perform the intervention through a small hole, the first stage was decompression trepanation of her skull. The girls removed a large part of the skull bone and removed the excess fluid.
Then the bone had to be put back in place, but it turned out to be impossible. The suppuration caused the brain to swell and we had to wait for it to come down.
At this time, in order to keep the bone sterile, the surgeons placed it in the girl’s front abdominal wall, having previously formed a “pocket” there.
It was noted that as soon as the edema subsided – the bone is reimplanted in place, performing plastic surgery of the dura mater. All several stages of the intervention are successful.
The hospital reported that the girl is now returning home healthy. She spent a month in hospital.
