The fact is that in the body of red meat lovers live certain intestinal bacteria, which play a key role in converting a dietary nutrient called carnitine, the “enemy”: a chemical known as TMAO. It promotes blood clotting and clogged arteries.
“People with high levels of red meat in their diets tend to have a higher risk of heart disease and stroke than those who eat little red meat,” said study co-author Dr. Stanley Heisen.
In turn, saturated fats in animal products can increase the level of “bad” cholesterol in the blood, which contributes to cardiovascular disease, added Heisen.
