According to Kluge, in the first week of 2022, more than 7 million new cases of COVID-19 were registered in the region, and in two weeks this figure has more than doubled.
As of January 10, 26 countries report that more than 1% of their population is infected with COVID-19 every week, according to the WHO Regional Director.
He noted that in 50 of the 53 countries in Europe and Central Asia, cases of Omicron, which is rapidly becoming dominant in Western Europe and is now spreading in the Balkans, have been reported.
Quote:
“At this rate, according to the Institute of Health Metrics and Assessment (IHME), in the next 6-8 weeks, more than 50% of the region’s population will be infected with Omicron,” said Kluge.
Addition
Experts believe that there is growing evidence that the new version of the coronavirus “Omicron” affects the upper respiratory tract, causing milder symptoms than previous versions. However, more research is needed today to prove this.
WHO data show that the variant, first identified in November, has spread rapidly and been seen in at least 128 countries. However, although the number of cases has risen to record levels, hospitalization and mortality rates are often lower than in other stages of the pandemic.
But the WHO said that the variant of the coronavirus “Omicron”, although it looks less serious than “Delta”, does not belong to the category of “lungs”.
However, the head of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adan Gebreyesus, believes that the coronavirus pandemic should end in 2022.
