“We need to prepare for the next pandemic by investing in monitoring, early detection and rapid response in each country, as well as by strengthening the authority of the World Health Organization,” Guterres said.
He recalled the strategy aimed at vaccinating 40% of the world’s population by the end of 2021 and 70% by mid-2022. The Secretary General acknowledged that humanity is still far from these figures.
“It’s a shame, but vaccination rates in high-income countries are seven times higher than in Africa. We need fairness in the distribution of vaccines right now,” he said.
Guterres added that the fight against COVID-19 should take place on equal terms.
The countries with the highest number of coronavirus patients are the United States, India, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Russia, Turkey, Italy, Spain and Germany.
Let’s add
In late December 2021, Guterres said that COVID-19 would not be the last pandemic that humanity would face.
