“This pandemic is far from over, and with the incredible increase in Omicron cases worldwide, new options are likely to emerge, so monitoring and evaluation remain critical,” the WHO said.
Addition
The head of the WHO warned against considering the high-transmission Omicron an easy option, causing new outbreaks around the world after it was first discovered in southern Africa in November.
Against the backdrop of outbreaks, governments are imposing new restrictions and accelerating the launch of booster vaccinations.
Europe is at the epicenter of new outbreaks: the number of new cases in Germany has exceeded 100,000, and France reported nearly half a million cases on Tuesday.
Five million cases were reported in Europe last week, and the WHO estimates that Omicron could infect half of all Europeans by March, filling hospitals across the continent.
