Israeli researchers have found that age-related brain atrophy can be slowed by the large amount of greens contained in the Mediterranean diet. It contains high levels of polyphenols – nutrients that occur naturally under plants. In addition, the Mediterranean diet is low in red and processed meat, which causes inflammation in all parts of the body, including the brain.
The study involved 284 people aged 31 to 82 years. They were randomly divided into three groups depending on the diet. In one group they followed just a healthy diet, in another – the Mediterranean diet, and in the third – its variety, but with lots of greens. In particular, participants in the third group received 3-4 cups of green tea a day and a cocktail of semolina.
All study participants underwent MRI of the brain before and after the experiment. They also went to the gym and exercised. The smallest decrease in age-related cognitive impairment was observed in those who followed both forms of the Mediterranean diet. But it was in the third group with a large amount of greens that the maximum slowing of age-related brain atrophy was observed among participants over 50 years of age who have an increased susceptibility to these pathological processes due to age.
