Day of Unity of Ukraine
It is an official national holiday celebrated in honor of the Act of Unification (Unification) of the Ukrainian People’s Republic and the Western Ukrainian People’s Republic of 1919. Also a year before (1918) the independence of the Ukrainian People’s Republic was proclaimed. This holiday is of great importance for every citizen of Ukraine.
It was on January 22, 1918 in Kyiv during a meeting of the Small Council that the Fourth Universal was signed, proclaiming the independence of the Ukrainian People’s Republic. On that day, all ideas of autonomy were abandoned and ties with Imperial Russia severed. But the newly formed state was attacked by the Bolsheviks, so its sovereignty, unfortunately, was short-lived.
Universal IV proclaimed the full sovereignty of the UPR, as well as the desire of the young state to have peaceful relations with neighboring countries. The document also stated that neighboring countries have no right to interfere in the internal affairs of the UPR. Peasants acquired land, natural resources came to national subordination. An army was created, the banks were subordinated to the central government, and a Constituent Assembly was convened to draft a Constitution.
A year later, on January 22, 1919, the Ukrainian People’s Republic and the Western Ukrainian People’s Republic merged into one country. Thus, a sovereign reunited Ukrainian State was formed. The event was solemn and took place on Independence Square in Kyiv.
The Day of Unity of Ukraine as a holiday was introduced by presidential decree in 1999. This event is of great historical and cultural significance. The Unification Act shows that Ukrainians have always wanted to reunite to build an independent state. Although this desire could come true only in 1991.
Remembrance Day of the Holy Martyr Eustratia
He suffered for his faith in Christ in Armenia when the reign was in the hands of Emperor Diocletian, known for his persecution of Christians. Initially, the priest of the Arabian Church, the martyr Auxentius, suffered for his faith. When Eustratius, who was the mayor of Satalion at the time, saw his suffering and resilience, he decided to admit that he had also secretly professed Christianity for a long time. For this, he was first brutally beaten and then burned. St. Auxentius was first imprisoned, starved, and then beheaded.
