The operation was performed on January 12, 2022 on one-year-old Artem, a resident of a village in the Carpathians. The child weighed only 9.5 kg, she had a congenital diagnosis of “Atresia of the bile ducts and severe liver failure.” Because of this, the boy had yellow skin and a big belly.
In August, it became known that only a liver transplant could save Artem.
“It (transplantation – ed.) From a posthumous donor to such small children in our country has not been done yet, and no one from the Artemkov family was a donor,” Samchuk wrote.
The boy and his mother have lived in hospital since August. On January 12, 2022, it became known that there was a donor in Vinnytsia – a 44-year-old man with a ruptured aneurysm in his brain. Doctors were unable to save the patient, but the man’s family signed a posthumous donation agreement.
The liver, which “lives” outside the body for a maximum of 12 hours, was transported from Vinnytsia by a helicopter of the National Police.
As noted, the surgery was supernatural. At first, doctors had to divide the donor liver to take part of it for Artem. Then the transplant itself began, which lasted about 12 hours.
“And although a successful operation is only half the way – there is no less difficult part ahead, the exhausted child’s body must adapt to life with a new organ, our team continues to make every effort to strengthen Artemko and soon leave our hospital as a healthy baby.” – wrote Samchuk.
