These few life hacks will help to take better care of houseplants. Certain life hacks will help to improve the care of houseplants.
Short light days, lack of sun, dry air and cold temperatures do not have the best effect on the condition of houseplants. The approach to each flower is individual, some species require more abundant watering and dry up in just a few weeks if not received; for some a small amount of liquid is enough, their main power source is light. Of course, it is also important to fertilize the soil, maintaining a certain level of nutrients. Despite the well-known rules of caring for houseplants, there are some simple and practical life hacks that will be relevant at any time of year,

Share a cup of your coffee with the plants
As it turned out, coffee is an ideal fertilizer for plants. It contains important nutrients such as nitrogen, potassium, calcium and magnesium. Coffee is especially rich in nitrogen, which stimulates stem growth, makes it stronger and gives sprouts a rich, bright color. This organic and very simple way of care is especially suitable for roses, hydrangeas and magnolias.
Do not throw ashes out of the fireplace
This method of soil enrichment may seem strange, but it really helps to prolong the life of houseplants and make them healthier. It is most suitable for fruits grown in country houses and cottages. Ash left in a fireplace or brazier is a source of calcium carbonate (lime) and potassium. Rub a small amount of ash into the soil, this additive will be an excellent substitute for the usual fertilization.
Water the soil with water containing starch
Because the lack of nutrients in winter is particularly acute due to the lack of sun, plants are trying to increase the reserves of starch in fruits and seeds. Starch is ideal for storing glucose. In its absence, the process of hydrolysis is started – re-decomposition of starch into molecules. Instead of buying special fertilizers, next time do not pour water after cooking potatoes or pasta, but cool the liquid and boldly go to watering.
Grind the eggshell in a pot
Eggshell is rich in lime, a versatile mineral that helps reduce soil acidity, and calcium, which nourishes plants abundantly. Before adding the shell to the soil, grind it into small pieces and distribute evenly over the entire surface.
Put a sponge on the bottom of the pot
Although almost all plants need regular watering, some species are still known to last longer than others without water. In order not to take another risk (especially if you forget about regular care), before planting the plants in a pot, put a small sponge on the bottom and cover it with soil. The sponge will absorb excess water, and in critical situations, the roots will be able to nourish the stored moisture.
Dilute English salt in a bottle for the next watering
Special fertilizer can be obtained by mixing 1 tbsp. l. English salt with 4 liters of water. Stir and allow the liquid to infuse for several days. Houseplants will benefit tremendously from the obtained magnesium and sulfate, because crystalline powder is a source of many minerals.
Add some cereal to the soil
Cereals are not only an excellent source of nutrients for humans. Put some of the food left over after eating in a pot, sprinkling a little soil on top. Such a plant supplement will be sufficient for fertilization, provided its monthly use.
Prepare a fertilizer from vinegar
Some houseplants love vinegar, especially species with flowering buds. The acid promotes rapid root growth and lush flowering, so in the end you will get a noticeable result that will make you happy. Mix 1 tsp. white vinegar with 1.5 liters of water and then use the solution about once every three months. The main thing – do not overdo it with abundant watering.
