“The EMA Committee on Medicinal Products for Human Use has recommended that conditional registration be given for the oral antiviral drug Paxlovid to treat COVID-19,” the statement said.
In particular, the drug was approved for people at high risk of severe coronavirus who do not need extra oxygen.
According to the EMA, treatment with Paxlovid significantly reduces the number of hospitalizations or deaths in patients with at least one underlying disease that can cause severe COVID-19.
According to the study, within a month after treatment with Paxlovid, which lasted 5 days, only 0.8% (8 of 1,039) patients were hospitalized for more than 24 hours. At the same time, the share of hospitalized patients among those given placebo was higher – 6.3% (66 out of 1,046 people).
In addition, there were no fatalities in the group of patients taking coronavirus pills. Nine people died in the placebo group.
As noted, the results of the study relate to a variant of the coronavirus “Delta”. However, Paxlovid is also expected to be effective against Omicron and other options.
