Francis called on all believers to pray for an end to the crisis, saying tensions threatened Europe’s security.
“The prayers that are being made to heaven today will touch the minds and hearts of world leaders so that dialogue can prevail and the common good is put above party interests,” the Pope added.
He reminded that more than 5 million people died in Ukraine during the Second World War, and that people there suffered from hunger and “great cruelty.”
“These are suffering people,” the Pope said of Ukrainians.
Let’s add
About 4 million Ukrainians died in the early 1930s, when Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin imposed the collectivization of agriculture and other measures to suppress Ukrainian nationalism.
The tragedy, recognized by a number of countries as a form of genocide, was called the Holodomor and is also known as the Terror-Gomorrah or the Great Holodomor.
