A new study in the journal Nature Communications has shown why exercise can be so good for our hearts .

In this study, researchers tested how exercise affects the hearts of two groups of mice. The first group had access to the running wheel, which they could use at will, and the second group did not have access to the wheel and was used as a sitting control group. Mice with access to the wheel ran about 5.5 km per day. The team observed two groups of mice for 8 weeks and saw significant differences in their hearts. Trained mice increased heart weight and showed signs of increased cardiac hypertrophy (cell growth and development). In other words, these mice restored their heart cells. The effect was quite large, with trained animals producing almost 5 times more new heart cells than in the control group.
In a second study published in the journal Physiology International, older mice were divided into groups that led a sedentary lifestyle, underwent high-intensity interval training or endurance training. Two groups that played sports showed an increased rate of regeneration of heart cells, which effectively maintained the youth of their hearts. Aging reduces the heart’s ability to regenerate cells, so exercise can have significant benefits for maintaining and improving heart health with age.
Heart cells in humans are relatively difficult to regenerate, and the loss of heart cells is associated with heart failure. New cell regeneration can also help patients recover from heart attacks – heart attacks damage heart cells, and cell regeneration is an important method of recovery.
