Irreversible brain damage
A study by American researchers found that people who did multiple tasks at the same time had a lower brain density in the area responsible for emotional control. The situation was aggravated by the use of multimedia devices. Such actions in the long run provoke irreversible consequences.
Decreased efficiency and mental performance
Every instantaneous switch between tasks causes depletion of energy and brain resources. This leads to mistakes, hinders creative thinking, reduces productivity. Research has shown that it takes 23 minutes to focus on a task after a break. A huge amount of time can be wasted due to repetitive switching during the day.
Weakening of the mind
According to research, in people who performed several tasks at once, the IQ level corresponded to the age of an eight-year-old child. It is difficult for the brain to process many streams of information at once. Lack of focus and attention reduces the ability to learn effectively.
Creating anxiety
Multitasking increases the brain’s production of cortisol, a hormone that causes stress. At the same time a person gets tired mentally, which leads to a new round of anxiety.
Decreased emotional intelligence
This concept implies two components – self-awareness and social awareness. Multitasking turns off the part of the brain that is responsible for these factors.
Decreased creativity
New thoughts, creative ideas come at a time of high concentration of the mind. If it is absent due to numerous switches between tasks, it is difficult to create, to generate something original.
Fatigue and burnout
When the brain shifts attention from one activity to another, its prefrontal cortex burns oxygen-rich glucose. This is the fuel that is needed to complete tasks. After a short period of time, a person feels tired due to a lack of nutrients in the brain.
Making stupid decisions
Constant switching leads to the accumulation of fatigue, impulsive behavior. The depleted state ends with a decrease in the quality of decisions on important issues.
