According to them, Sweden, together with Great Britain, Canada, Switzerland and the United States, has launched a new fund to strengthen Ukraine’s resilience due to the conflict in the south-eastern region.
“The fund will strengthen resilience to Russian aggression in eastern and southern Ukraine by helping to improve public service delivery, dialogue and inclusive economic development,” said Development Cooperation Minister Matilda Ernkrans.
They added that the fund will complement UN assistance. In December 2021, Sweden adopted a strategy to promote regional reforms in Eastern Europe for the period 2021-2027. The document provides funding of 6.6 billion Swedish kronor ($ 705 million).
Context
Western countries have recently paid particular attention to the build-up of Russian forces along the border with Ukraine, the danger of a new Russian invasion and increased Russian disinformation.
At the end of last year, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Oleksiy Danilov said that 122,000 Russian servicemen were at a distance of 200 km and 143.5 thousand servicemen 400 km from the Russian-Ukrainian border.
The main demand of the Kremlin leader is assurances from the United States and its allies that NATO will not expand further east and will not deploy weapons systems there, which Russia considers a threat.
