Almost 40,000 people took part in the study. The researchers compared antibiotic use and lifestyle factors in those who had colorectal cancer with those who did not. The study found a direct link to antibiotics and colon cancer.
“The use of antibiotics is very common, and it is important to note that not everyone who takes antibiotics develops bowel cancer. However, although antibiotics are invaluable in medicine, they should be used properly and only when necessary,” said study co-author Sarah Perrott.
It is assumed that the reasons are related to the effect of antibiotics on the natural diversity of bacteria in the intestinal microbiome, which can potentially lead to changes in bacterial activity and disruption of normal immune function. And this could theoretically increase the risk of cancer.
“It is important to note that diet, lifestyle, stress and many different factors can affect intestinal health, and the use of antibiotics is just one of these factors,” she said.
