Some lifestyle factors increase the risk of cancer. One such factor is nutrition. It is known, for example, that regular consumption of processed meat makes a person prone to bowel cancer. But scientists have also been able to link malignant tumors to the consumption of certain vegetables. According to data published in the British Journal of Cancer, “pickled vegetables may increase the risk of esophageal cancer.”
Esophageal cancer means the appearance of a malignant tumor anywhere in this organ. The researchers analyzed data from 34 studies, and as a result they found a statistically significant relationship between the consumption of pickled vegetables and the risk of developing this type of cancer. Fans of this snack have doubled the risk of developing esophageal cancer, experts say.
Symptoms of esophageal cancer
They are usually associated with indigestion:
swallowing problems (dysphagia);
heartburn or acid reflux;
severe belching.
Other possible symptoms:
cough that does not go away;
hoarse voice;
unexplained loss of appetite or weight;
feeling tired or lacking in energy;
sore throat or mid-chest (especially noticeable when swallowing).
Salted vegetables
In turn, the World Cancer Research Foundation warns of the dangers of eating vegetables cooked by salting. Experts say that “eating salty vegetables is associated with a risk of developing stomach cancer.”
In general, scientists say, people who regularly eat very salty foods, double their risk of developing stomach cancer.
