Experts explained that in most cases during breastfeeding a young mother can drink 2-3 cups of caffeinated beverage a day without significant impact on the child.
However, there are cases when children (usually aged 3 to 5 months) show signs of sensitivity to this substance. Most often it manifests itself in the form of irritability and sleep problems. In such cases, caffeine intake should be reduced to 200 mg per day.
As an alternative to your favorite coffee, you can use its decaffeinated counterparts, herbal teas, natural fruit juices (up to 150 ml per day) or mineral water.
“For reference: 1 cup of unfiltered coffee ~ 140 mg of caffeine, 1 cup of instant coffee ~ 100 mg, 1 cup of tea ~ 75 mg, 50 g of ordinary chocolate bar ~ up to 50 mg,” the experts added.
Women should consult their doctor before drinking coffee.
