Almost +13 ° C: Ukrainian polar explorers in Antarctica set a temperature record
A new temperature record of 12.7 degrees Celsius was recorded this week at the Ukrainian station “Academician Vernadsky” in Antarctica. This was announced on Facebook by the National Antarctic Research Center .

The previous record was set in 1985 – 11.7 degrees Celsius.
Scientists attribute such a sharp warming to the phenomenon of “atmospheric river”, the enhanced effect of “mountain hair dryer”.
Atmospheric river is a narrow strip with a high concentration of atmospheric moisture, which quickly transferred warm air and moisture from the tropics to Antarctica.
The effect of “mountain hair dryer” is a strong warm wind from the mountains. The reason for the development of this effect is the formation of precipitation over the mountains (from which the air loses moisture and heats up).
“As global warming is expected to increase rainfall in the polar regions, the intensity of hair dryers will continue to increase. Such temperature records are alarming, because they are one of the signs of climate change,” said the NASC.
