German Chancellor Angela Merkel asked Belarusian opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya if she understood Ukrainian?
Svitlana Tikhanovska said this in an interview with Radio Svoboda.
“You know, they (European leaders – ed.) Have very good information about the situation in Belarus. They know what is happening, are involved in this situation and would like to help in any way. Of course, this does not always work out the way they would like. But we feel this support. Angela Merkel, by the way, is not what she mentioned, but she speaks about Ukraine, about the Ukrainian language. She says: “Do you understand Ukrainian?”. I say: “Of course, I understand – it is very, very close to Belarusian (not very similar to Russian), and we understand each other quite easily. – “Well”. We had such a fleeting conversation, ”Tikhanovska said.
She added that they spoke English with Merkel, who understands Russian.
