International Day of Women and Girls in Science
The holiday was established “in order to achieve full and equal access for women and girls to science, as well as to ensure gender equality and empowerment of women and girls.”
In the portraits of “outstanding scientists” in school or university offices, we see mostly men. The story of women scientists is not just a story of achievement, it is a story of resistance and struggle.
Women began to engage in science since ancient times, in particular, Hypatia of Alexandria (mathematics, astronomy, mechanics) 370-415 was one of the greatest scientists of his time.
However, women in science in the 21st century face discrimination. Women in the natural, technical, engineering, and mathematical sciences publish fewer scientific papers, receive lower pay for their research, and do not move up the career ladder like men.
After the birth of a child, women in science are more likely to face discrimination. For long periods of lack of active research, some institutions fine their employees, lowering their ratings. One British university researched this issue and it turned out that 100% of the fined scientists are women with children.
Marie Sklodowska-Curie. An outstanding scientist, founder of the science of radioactivity, twice winner of the Nobel Prize. It was she who showed the world that women have a place in science.

The martyr Ignatius the Godbearer was thrown to beasts in Rome in 107 by order of Emperor Trajan. After his death, Christians collected the saint’s bones and kept them in Rome for a long time. In 108 the relics were moved to the suburbs of Antioch. The last transfer took place in 438. Then the relics were moved to the city of Antioch.
