According to research, celery consumption can have a significant effect on blood sugar.
The researchers analyzed the effect of celery leaf extract on blood glucose levels in elderly people with prediabetes. Prediabetes is a serious condition in which the blood sugar level is higher than normal, but not yet so high that it can be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes.
The study was conducted at Syiah Kuala University School of Medicine. It was a quasi-experimental pretest with a control group. The group of subjects included 16 elderly people over 60 years of age with prediabetic condition (six men and 10 women).
Participants were randomly divided into two groups: control group (taking placebo) and treatment group (taking celery).
Celery was taken by subjects three times a day (morning, afternoon and evening) 30 minutes before meals for 12 days. The authors observed a “significant decrease” in plasma glucose levels after a meal, which reached 19.5% after treatment in the celery group.
The researchers concluded that celery is “effective” in lowering blood glucose.
