Intuitive nutrition came to us from the West, where it is estimated to have gained strength in 20-30 years (it is believed that the pioneers of the system were three Americans who wrote the first official book on emotional addiction to food). In the 2000s, when the focus from universal diets shifted to individuality and responsiveness to one’s own needs, the approach became particularly popular.
The meaning of intuitive nutrition is that hunger is the only reasonable reason to eat. Hungry – go, but only in this case, and in no other. The main advantage of such a catering organization is the absence of strict restrictions (the main rule – no rules). This is not only pleasant, but also justified: as soon as we start to limit ourselves in something (the amount of food or certain types of food), we immediately want to break the forbidden limits. Intuitive nutrition does not require counting calories and keeping a food diary (if you already want chocolate or a bun, you can eat it), so it seems the perfect way to keep your weight in check. But, as practice shows, not everything is so easy.
Why in our time is it reckless to rely only on the desires of the body? Modern manufacturers of sweets and fast food “plant” people on donuts, burgers and other delicacies as drugs, using special combinations of ingredients and flavors (for example, a certain balance of salty and sweet). This food activates the pleasure center in the brain, and we want to experience the same sensations over and over again. Gradually, the consumption of not the most healthy products from disposable becomes regular, it becomes a habit and addiction develops. Can a person trust the SOS signals from the body that he needs a chocolate muffin or a bag of chips? Of course not. Here are the main reasons that work against intuitive nutrition, forcing you to gain extra pounds.
We do not watch what we eat
Before
Several thousand years ago, getting food was not an easy task (sometimes quite dangerous), but the food was as healthy as possible. Our ancestors received with food a large amount of polyunsaturated fatty acids (fish and seafood, seeds), fiber (vegetables, fruits, roots), essential vitamins and trace elements. The glycemic load on the body was minimal: they received simple sugars in small quantities and only from natural sources (fruits, roots, wild honey).
Now
Features of modern man’s diet – an excess of refined products (sweets, polished cereals, packaged juices, instant cereals), lack of fiber, a large number of trans fats and toxic additives (all sorts of E), excess salts. All this complicates the control of eating behavior: it is difficult to refrain from eating a delicacy.
Eat in a hurry
Before
Eating took place without haste, the whole family gathered at the table, people ate slowly and focused. Sometimes a prayer was said before eating. Many cultures have traditionally eaten in silence. In this case, it was possible to listen to the desires of your body, and during the meal to get “feedback” from the brain about satiety.
Now
The pace of life increased, and we began to spend very little time on food. Many people eat hastily, not regularly, choosing fast food. In such circumstances, it is difficult to objectively assess why you wanted to eat a hamburger, because at least you need to take a break and ask yourself a few questions (what are the feelings in your body, what emotional state, whether you can change your state without help “harmful” food).
We confuse hunger with appetite
There is nothing wrong with wanting to enjoy food: this is how our nervous system works – delicious food triggers the release of “pleasure hormones”. It is bad when we abuse this feature of eating behavior. Eating is one of the most affordable pleasures, so it’s easier to cheer up by eating a cake than walking. We get a substitution of concepts: with the body’s intuitive need for a product, we confuse the appetite – the desire to enjoy food (often a favorite, but harmful – sausages, chips or sweets). Hunger is a signal that you need to eat. It is accompanied by clear physical reactions of the body (rumbling in the stomach), and in this case you will enjoy even a green salad, and lean soup, and a piece of black bread.
