New antibodies from pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly will be delivered free of charge to the states if the Food and Drug Administration approves the company’s request for an emergency use permit, said Health and Social Services Minister Xavier Beserra.
The government’s move comes after two leading treatments for monoclonal antibodies in the United States have proved ineffective against the omicron variant, which now accounts for almost all COVID-19 cases in the country. The data indicate that Lilly acts against omicron, including a new mutation in BA.2. The company said the contract for its new drug, Bebtelovimab, was worth at least $ 720 million.
Monoclonal antibodies made in the laboratory replace the immune system of the human body, blocking the penetration of the virus. Intravenous or injectable drugs are designed to be given in the early stages of infection to prevent serious illness and death. Former President Donald Trump received a combination of antibodies after he tested positive for coronavirus in 2020.
