It is noted that the accident occurred at about 16:35 near the station Ebenhausen-Scheftlarn. The cause is currently unknown.
A spokesman for the Munich Police Department, Andreas Franken, said both trains were on the same route at the same time and collided head-on on the same railway line.
According to the Bild newspaper, there were only 95 people on the two trains.
More than 200 emergency workers arrived on the scene. Railway operator Deutsche Bahn has said a formal investigation has been launched.
