To determine the effects of light on the body, scientists conducted an experiment. To do this, they divided a team of obese people from 14 people from 40 to 75 people into two groups. Some lived during the day in bright light, and in the evening – in dim. The second group, on the contrary, functioned almost in the dark during the day and lived in bright light in the evening. At the same time, both teams were in the dark at night and their diet was regular, with the necessary content of calories and macronutrients.
Next, blood samples were taken from study participants before morning and evening meals, as well as every half hour for four hours after breakfast and dinner. In the analysis, doctors looked at the level of those indicators that play an important role in human metabolism.
As a result, it turned out that bright lighting during the day led to a decrease in blood glucose levels, while in the evening lighting helped to slow down metabolism in sleep. It turns out that with the same diet, participants who turned on the bright light in the evening, burned fewer calories in their sleep and gained weight. Thus, the natural cycle of light and darkness improves metabolism, the doctor concluded.
