In December 2021, the GITAI R1 robotic rover was successfully tested in a simulated lunar surface environment at the Sagamihara JAXA campus. The moonwalker climbed over rocks, was able to build a solar panel, and took soil samples with the help of robotic hands.
Thanks to four wheels with individual omnidirectional steering, the robot can move and remove obstacles in any direction.
The GITAI and JAXA team has carried out a number of activities necessary to assemble complex structures (solar panels, communication antennas, etc.) on the Moon, which will be an important infrastructure for the lunar bases planned by NASA.
Scientists also used the robot to collect simulated regolith from the lunar surface. To do this, R1 GITAI removes the necessary tools from the container, moves to a certain point, collects monthly samples and stores them, returns all the equipment to the container and closes it.
