Diabetes is characterized by the fact that a person’s blood sugar level becomes too high. There are two types of diabetes, type 1 and type 2. In type 1, the body’s immune system attacks and destroys insulin-producing pancreatic cells, and in type 2, the body does not produce enough insulin or the body’s cells do not respond.
Predisposition to this disease is influenced by various factors, one of which may be the state of mind – this is a new study conducted by experts from the University of Massachusetts (USA). After analyzing the medical records of more than 300,000 people between the ages of 40 and 69, researchers found that “mental health may play a role in the incidence of diabetes – people with depression are 30% more likely to develop it than people without depression “.
The researchers’ findings were published in the journal Nature Cardiovassal Research. In his article, scientists say that the vulnerable psyche may also indicate a predisposition to heart disease.
“People with depression have a higher risk of developing coronary heart disease and arrhythmias.”
Scientists say that this connection is more pronounced in women: depressed women with coronary heart disease are more common than men.
According to researchers, the mechanism of linking diseases and mental disorders “is not fully understood”, but the data suggest that “treatment of depression may reduce the risk of cardiometabolic diseases.”
