A 9,000-year-old shrine has been found in the Jordanian desert
In the eastern desert of Jordan, a team of French and Jordanian archaeologists found a shrine about 9,000 years old. The ritual complex is located in a Neolithic camp near large buildings known as “desert kites”, which are believed to have been used for a detachment of wild animals.

Scientists have found two carved standing stones with anthropomorphic figures, one of which depicts a “desert kite”. The complex also had an altar, a place for a fire, sea shells and a miniature model of a gazelle trap.
Archaeologists note that this find “sheds new light on the symbolism, artistic expression, and spiritual culture of these hitherto unknown Neolithic populations.”
